El Zurich

En una de las esquinas de Plaça de Catalunya con La Rambla, la terraza de el Zurich es un punto de encuentro tradicional, también bueno para, simplemente, sentarse a mirar y dejarse ver. Antes de la construcción del moderno edificio de El Triangle, donde están ubicado FNAC, Habitat y otras marcas célebres, el Zurich recordaba el ambiente de los cafés clásicos europeos. Los camareros, curtidos en atender a un personal variopinto de locales y turistas, de jóvenes y maduros, han conseguido dar continuidad a la vida de esta esquina estratégica de la ciudad.

El Zurich
Located on the corner of Plaça de Catalunya and La Rambla, the Zurich bar terrace remains a traditional meeting point and also a good place to observe or be observed. Before the building of El Triangle which houses FNAC, Habitat and other well known shops, the Zurich captured the traditional atmosphere of a classic European Café. The waiters still briskly despatch orders from a diverse clientele of locals and tourists, the young, and not so young and have successfully contributed to keeping this strategic part of the city bristling.

La Rambla

Su nombre, del árabe rámla, recuerda el lecho por el que corrían las aguas tormentosas del llano de Barcelona, entre las montañas Tibidabo y Montjuïch. Hoy la fuerza tumultuosa de la ciudad continúa fluyendo día y noche en una riada de miles y miles de personas, locales y turistas, que bajando La Rambla o a contracorriente, pasean entre la Plaça Catalunya y el Port Vell.
Como en todo buen lugar de aguas revueltas, de las óperas del Liceu a sus turbias aceras nocturnas, en La Rambla todo se mezcla, lo señorial y lo canalla, lo artístico y lo chabacano. Un lugar obligado para dejarse llevar o sentarse a mirar el pulso de la ciudad.

La Rambla
The Arabic rámla denotes a dry river bed along which storm waters rush, here from the mountains of Tibidabo and Montjuïch to the plain of Barcelona. Today the tumultuous force of the city continues the flow day and night as a stream of thousands of people from all over the world- locals, residents and shoals of tourists – drift in the current or counter current from Plaça Catalunya to the Port Vell. As is found in all turbulent waters, froth swirls around the opera of Liceu, its murky nocturnal adjacent pools ripple with everything from grandeur to tackiness, art to crassness, elegance to uncouthness. La Rambla is on every visitor’s map as the place to let yourself go or tread water and reflect on the ever changing pressures on the city centre.

Tapas: caña y bravas

“Una de bravas y dos cañas” es el grito de guerra de muchos camareros en los bares de Barcelona, especialmente a esas horas del mediodía en que el estómago reclama un horario europeo de comidas. En Barcelona, la comida principal se hace entre las dos y las cuatro de la tarde y esas patatas horneadas, con salsas de más o menos arte, acompañadas de una cantidad moderada de cerveza, son una buena forma de llegar a los platos principales con charla y sin inquietud. Como otras tapas célebres en la ciudad, también se toman al final de la tarde, con la pereza y desbarajustes propios de sábados y domingos, o, en general, siempre que se tenga algo de tiempo por delante o el hambre apremie.

Snack:  A beer and brava potatoes
“Una de bravas y dos cañas” is the war cry of many waiters in Barcelona, especially at midday when the stomach rumbles to a Northern European rhythm. Here lunch is usually eaten between two and four in the afternoon, hence these little roast potatoes with an inspiring sauce washed down with a moderate amount of beer make a pleasant pang-free indulgence while chatting your way to the main courses. Like other famous city tapas, they are also enjoyed early evening and leisurely savoured on idle Saturdays and Sundays or simply when you have some time and hunger to kill.
